Haircutting is an art.  Hairdresser's are sculptors working on a soft median. That median is hair.  It has its natural growth patterns, texture, and thickness that determine the actual style of the hair and also determines the length the hair can or cannot be.  For example:  baby fine, thin hair was not meant to be long.  A good strong foundation with perhaps graduation or long layers will compliment this type of hair.  Curly, bushy hair was not meant to be straight, and straight, poky hair was not meant to be curly.   Nature provided you with a particular structure and type of hair.  That is the foundation that determines what to do next.  This is where the artist comes in.  An artist can look at the hair and it talks to them.  Very much like a sculptor who looks at a piece of clay, or bronze and receives the vision.    There is the mechanics of haircutting that most anyone can learn, but it is very difficult to teach someone to go one step further and read the hair as an artist.  This is a natural gift that one must have in order to create on such a soft median.

A good haircut has the signature of an artist by its foundation and grow out.  A good haircut grows out and maintains the original shape, it simply gets longer.  This is because the foundation is strong, meaning it has shape, or weight lines to hold the style together. he common problem in most haircuts is overlayering.  This means the chunkiness, or strength of the hair has been removed by layering too much.  Once this happens it is difficult to give the hair a strong foundation and many times cowlicks become worse and the hair does unnatural things.  The laws of nature dictate the length of the hair according to the bone structure, texture, thickness, growth patterns and so on.  When the hair is cut in opposition with these laws it never lays right and always need attention.  This is why so many styling aids are on the market. They help make the hair manageable after the cowlicks have been made to stand on end from overlayering.              What is wrong with a little length on the top of the head?  Nothing.  In fact it makes the hair more manageable by giving motion to the hair.  The hairstyle can be moved around and given a variety of  looks simply because of the length.  When it is too short it will go where nature intended it.

The natural growth of the hair and each hair strand is very much like the branches on a tree.  If you bend the branch and let go it springs back to its original position unless you bend it past the breaking point.  If you cut the branch short it springs straight out from the joint where it meets the trunk.  This is what the hair does.  If it is cut short it must follow the direction of natural growth.  If it is longer it is more flexible and can be molded more readily.               Some of us have been endowed with thick heads of wavy hair and others with thin, fine hair.  Whatever is your gift, cherish it.  It is a living thing that needs attention and love.  Negative thoughts influence the growth of your hair as well as the right haircut.

A good haircut encourages growth and thickness if needed.  A good haircut  helps bushy hair become more manageable and thinning hair appear thicker.  The use of thinning shears and improper cutting can do more damage to the hair than the use of perms and colors.    Haircutting is the foundation for all other services performed.  Without a good haircut, colors and perms are useless.
