Styling and Hair Care Tips

Healthy hair and skin, which normally have an acidic pH of 4.5, is regarded as being in a state of balanced acidity with a product, if the product has the same pH of 4.5.

Many shampoos on the market today are not in this range of pH balance, thus creating damaged hair.  Alkalinity damages hair protein and results in harsh, dry conditions. This is greatly influenced by weather conditions and health of the body.  Frizzy, unmanageable hair is a result of alkalinity damage.  Regular use of a shampoo with balanced acidity will keep the hair structurally firm.

Your hair is 97% protein and nature provides a barrier of acidic oils and special moisturizing ingredients to protect the hair and skin.  This protective barrier is called the acid mantle.  It is removed by alkaline body soaps and hair shampoos, causing a loss of vital moisture.  This results in dry, brittle, over-porous hair, with possible damage to the cuticle layer of the hair shaft. The cuticle layer is very much like scales on a fish.

In healthy hair this layer is tightly woven together, in damaged hair the cuticle layer is seen as ruffled and standing on end.  When this layer is damaged the hair tangles easily and becomes very frizzy and unmanageable.

For a shampoo to thoroughly cleanse the hair, it must gently open the cuticle layer of the hair.  This is helped with the use of warm water.   Have you ever tried to shampoo your hair in cold water?  It never seems to be as clean.  This is simply because warm water opens the cuticle and cold water closes it.

Conditioners act to close the cuticle layer and re-balance the moisture loss from shampooing.   A cool water rinse is recommended if a conditioner is not being used.  Water that is too hot can cause extreme dryness of the hair and skin if  precautionary measures are not taken.  This can be done by simply adding a good conditioner to your daily routine of shampooing and for the skin, adding moisturizers after the shower.   Living in a dry climate like  these precautionary measures are extremely important to prevent dry, scaly skin and hair.

Professional hair and skin care products are specifically formulated to maintain the proper moisture balance.  The ingredients are concentrated and require that you use less of them in order to achieve the best results.  They are not filled with unnecessary waxes and fillers that only act to camouflage the actual condition of the hair.  They work in balance with nature to provide natural cleansing action as opposed to harsh chemical reactions.

Nature demands that your hair and skin must be acidic at all times to be in its best condition.   At pH 4.5, hair will have its greatest elasticity, lustre and strength and the skin will have pliability, softness and a healthy glow.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY HAIR

1. To increase blood circulation and improve nutrient absorption, massage your scalp for a minumum of three to five minutes daily.  Get regular exercise and if you have good sense of balance and no physical problems try to invert yourself so your head is lower then your feet for a few minutes daily.

2. Use professional hair care products such as Paul Mitchell to cleanse, condition and style your hair.

3. Keep blow drying to a minimum as the heat can be very damaging. Never blow dry your hair when it is dripping wet.  After shampooing wrap your hair in a towel, turban style, and allow the moisture to be absorbed this way first then you may blow dry and style it.  Towel blot the hair dry, do not shake the towel back and forth against the hair as this is abrasive and disturbs the cuticle layer.

4. Always use a wide tooth comb to slowly untangle wet hair beginning from the bottom up for longer hair. If the hair is dry, brush with a wide bristle vent brush being careful not to the break or damage the hair.

5. Avoid excess exposure to the sun and wind.  Wear hats and protect not only our hair but your skin.  These elements can cause dryness and brittle ends.

6. Refrain from smoking cigarettes.  The chemicals in the smoke starve the hair follicle of important nutrients and absorbs the odors in the hair making it brittle.

7. Nutritional supplements assist in provided needed nutrients for your hair growth and maintenance. A formula containing amino acids (building block proteins), minerals and vitamines aimed at strengthening your hair is a good selection.
